#MUAs:
If you’re that Makeup Artist that does not have experience with varied
complexions, or a pro kit for global skin tones, ask yourself these
questions:
•Why is my kit ill-equipped for any/every skin tone?
•Why don’t I know how to work on any/every skin shade?
•Why have I never pursued including models of different ethnicities in my portfolio?
•Why have I never even thought that it is necessary for my skill set to include global skin tones?
•Do I know people of ranging ethnicities? Why not? Am I not exposed to diverse groups of people in my every day life?
•Is my initial reaction to this subject matter becoming defensive, getting uncomfortable, and making excuses?
•Where would I even go if I wanted to learn multi-ethnic skin?
•What would I do if I was confronted about being unprepared?
•Am I too comfortable with the fact that I rarely (if ever) encounter many people of color?
•Am I part of the problem?

NEW MAKEUP ARTIST PHOTO SHOOT CHECKLIST
§_____________________________________________________________________________________§
Are you a new MUA & have questions about what is expected of you on photo shoots? Experience is your best teacher whether it comes through assisting more seasoned artists or doing lots of shooting on your own. There are a lot of details to be mindful of as you pursue building your body of work & portfolio, honing your craft & establishing yourself as a Makeup Artist. Here is a bit of information that may help you along the way.
NUMBER ONE: Upon booking the shoot, establish lines of communication between yourself & EVERY MEMBER OF THE CREATIVE TEAM. You want to have the confidence that you know how to approach the execution of the makeup looks with COMPLETE CLARITY ON THE CREATIVE DIRECTION. Ask questions, ask for images, ask to see the talent, model/models & every person you will be working on. Find out about their skin & hair. Go in with as much information as possible.
NIGHT BEFORE:
---Bookmark images of makeup looks that may go with the direction of the shoot. You want to get a clear picture of the whole creative team's goals.
---Pack: Your own lighting. Oil sheen spray in case the looks call for glistening skin on the face & body. Makeup remover wipes to transition between looks & prep the skin.
---Go over in your head, then write a few notes on the different textures, finishes & over-all features of different styles of makeup. (Beauty, Clean Beauty, Fashion, Pin-Up, Urban, Lingerie, Natural, Nude, Neutral, Monotone, Basic Commercial, Goth, Grunge, Heroin Chic, Avant Garde, Fantasy, 20s, 30s, 40s, 50, 60s, 70s, 80s etc)
---Weigh these points with the contents of your kit. Be ready to expand your product knowledge by using products in multiplicity. (Pencils, pigments as lip color, mixing pigments & loose powders with cream/liq foundation to come up with new textures/colors for highlighting/contouring/cheek colors etc)
AT THE SHOOT:
---Be clear on how many looks you will be executing so that you can manage your progress. You may decide to transition from one look to another or start from scratch between looks. You want to be able to map that out.
---Find out how much time you may have to execute each look so that you can pace yourself.
---Speak to each person on the creative team. Ask if there are any images that they want you to see. Make sure you are on the same page they are.
---Ask photographer about the specifics of the lighting that you should know. (Intensity, natural, filtered, up, direct, reflected, silhouette etc)
---Be mindful of your pace so that you can allot a few moments to make adjustments on set in actual lighting conditions.
---Ask photographer to let you see frames during the shoot so you can see how your work is coming across.
---Gage progress of the shoot by asking members of the team:
Any adjustments? Softer eyes? More dramatic eyes/lips? Softer/heavier brows? More highlighting? More facial sculpting?
Be confident that you are an equal member of a team, yet RESPECTING THE INHERENT HIERARCHY & go in there positive that you will give your best!
R O C K . I T . O U T!!! :-)
Sincerely,
JENNIFER JAMES BEAUTY

SO WHO HAS DONE A "TUTORIAL" TUTORIAL???
*Said really fast like disclaimers on radio commercials*
Disclaimer: Any resemblance to any known YOU TUBE (rs) is purely coincidental & criticism does not depict any single description of any 1 (one) account on You Tube or their affiliates i.e the following is solely opinion based ranting of an Internet addict who has OCD on so many levels that this disclaimer had to be included to protect the rights of the innocent & those who may be offended by said criticisms.
What is really happening??? What has become of pride??? Has shame cashed out its 401k & gone to retire??? Why is there, seemingly - no reference point for what's appropriate & what isn't???
WHAT THE HECK AM I TALKING ABOUT???
I know I'm not the only one who has noticed that things have gone awry in many areas of society - but gee wiz WHAT IS GOING ON OVER THERE ON YOU TUBE WITH THE MAKEUP TUTORIALS???
You have seen some of the same things I have? Right? I won't go into any specifics about makeup technique, but haven't some of you wondered why _______ has sssoooooooooooooo many hits when:
1) They don't seem to be very well versed at all in the subject they are offering instruction about. <<< WHY DOES ANYONE LISTEN TO THESE TYPES?
2) They lead off their video with disclaimers & requests to be excused for this&that because this is wrong or that is bad so please forgive me. Excuses out of the gate?! <<< WHY NOT WORK OUT THE KINKS, THEN FILM THE VIDEO?
3) The purpose of the video is to show HOW TO do something yet strikingly - they seem to be showing WHAT NOT TO DO in this particular instance. <<< WHO TOLD THEM THEY SHOULD ATTEMPT TO EDUCATE OTHERS? WHERE IS THE INDUSTRY STANDARD THAT THEY HAVE REFERENCED TO SUPPORT THEIR METHODS?
4) They have elected to film their video in an environment with so many noise distractions that you can't even pay attention to what they are saying. <<< WHY IS THIS SO COMMON? WHERE IS THE MODEL FOR THIS?
5) The background looks like a tornado has gone through the room! It's such a mess back there, you'd think Neicy Nash is going to walk up any second! <<< WHY WOULD IT BE OK TO REPRESENT YOURSELF THIS WAY?
7) An obviously wrinkled & not so new or clean looking bed-sheet draped over two broken halogen lamps is NOT - in any way, a desirable backdrop. <<< HOW COULD THIS POSSIBLY BE ACCEPTABLE STAGING?
(portable staging idea I've been tossing around)
8) Peeling wallpaper, crooked towel rack, moldy shower curtain, a general need for the total bathroom scrub down...& etc...<<< SO WHY HAS ONE CHOSEN THIS, A GLARINGLY FILTHY BATHROOM AS "PRODUCTION SET" TO BE A SIGNATURE OF THEIR YOU TUBE PRESENCE?
9) Dozens of videos/thousands upon thousands of views later & still no attempt to improve your overall image/presentation. Still mispronouncing company & product names. <<< SHOULDN'T HOBBYISTS, ENTHUSIASTS & MUAs BE HELD TO SOME STANDARD OF RESPECT FOR THE COLLEAGUES, COMPANIES & PRODUCTS THEY CRITIQUE/PROMOTE/REPRESENT?
10) Last, but hardly least...the wretched multi-tasking of engaging their YT audience & interacting with their kids, significant others, neighbors, other people, things & situations going on in the background. <<< HOW IN THE WORLD COULD ANYONE RATIONALIZE THAT THIS IS ACCEPTABLE TO A POTENTIALLY GLOBAL AUDIENCE?
...so the question remains... WHO HAS DONE A "TUTORIAL" TUTORIAL??? Where are the videos by You Tube gurus who are simply promoting and giving instruction on "THE ART" of producing a well made, thought out & polished tutorial no matter the subject?
It is by no means every beauty guru on YT that has caused me to cite the examples above - but you must agree that we see ENTIRELY TOO MANY vids that could be used as references for WHAT NOT TO DO when making them. I am amazed as to how many violators are on equal footing & above those who might be considered "cream of the crop in quality" relative to viral video success's bottom line - VIEWS! How few of those very views are gawkers just wanting to see a train wreck? Either way, those views represent potential influence & many companies look at that as a way to reach potential cu$tomer$.
As a makeup artist, most of the accounts that I subscribe to have something to do with makeup, beauty, cosmetics & all things related. I have been paying a good amount of attention to how I would like to increase my presence on You Tube & will not make another move towards it without careful consideration & planning. Regard for aesthetic standards of many industries comes into play: TV/video production, lighting, set design, cinematography, script writing, speech & personality.
Lighting
I only hope to be able to produce video content that will engage my audience, help my brand as well as elevating the collective reputation of MUAs & beauty hobbyists/enthusiasts on the Internet via You Tube.
So, again - here I am crying out to my fellow lovers of the makeup industry to take it up a notch. This time on You Tube. We should ALL care to REPRESENT OURSELVES most positively...I wish for more of us to be prouder ambassadors of our personal & collaborative message...
BEAUTY
...then again, I have to admit that there is BEAUTY in the sheer freedom that ANYONE & EVERYONE has the right to produce the video of their capabilities & broadcast it to the world...
...but you know me - I JUST HAD TO SAY SOMETHING!!! :-)
Sincerely,
Jennifer James | Makeup Artist

Sanitation is garbage pick-up. SANITIZATION IS CRUCIAL!!! Some make-up basics.
Prepare your tools & work-station:
Prep products for a sanitized work session:
Reminders:
_ NEVER double-dip disposable applicators (lip, mascara wands) into ANY product. Fresh disposable applicator EVERY time. Otherwise = instant contamination!
_ Keep work-station neat by having a small trash receptacle nearby for quick, easy disposal of used applicators, cotton swabs, sponges, tissues, sharpener shavings...
_ Use hand sanitizer or optimally WASH HANDS BETWEEN CLIENTS.
_ Brushes are properly maintained by regular shampooing & conditioning which facilitates their sanitization.
_ Thorough, gentle wiping of clients skin, eyes & lips w/ a moist facial cleansing cloth will contribute to your maintenance of a clean kit consistently.
_ ALWAYS BEGIN WITH THOROUGHLY WASHED HANDS.
I know, I know...complicated (microbiology aspects) yet simple (follow some basic rules) things like sanitization are very important to practice in your everyday routine. Health & safety 1st!

- Wipe down area with 91% or 99% alcohol, then lay fresh paper towel for a crisp clean work surface.
- Sanitize spatula, mixing palette, scissor, tweezer & other metal tools by thoroughly wiping down with alcohol soaked cotton ball. (after they have been thoroughly washed with warm soapy water and rinsed)
- Use an alcohol moistened cotton swab to completely clean pencil sharpener by swabbing BOTH sides of sharpener blade. Remove any/all debris.
- Of course begin with your freshly shampooed & adequately protected brush collection. (See blog link below, *Brush Cleaning)
Prep products for a sanitized work session:
- With plain facial tissue, lightly & gently wipe the surfaces of dry products like compact powders, eye shadows, blushes & bronzers removing the top layer of product. Then lightly spritz w/ 91% alcohol.
- Dip tips of traditional pencils into alcohol, sharpen then dip again. Take EXTRA CARE to wipe away excess alcohol with a facial tissue. Allow remaining alcohol to evaporate BEFORE using. Re-sanitize sharpener between pencils.
- Automatic/retractable pencils should be dipped into alcohol then wiped with a tissue. Be sure to remove the top layer of actual pencil product to effectively sanitize. Tip: always hold product end downward as to not flood mechanism with alcohol.
- Use previous method the effectively sanitize lipstick tubes.
- ALWAYS sample creamy products from jars/pots by skimming or scooping out with a sanitized spatula, then work directly from there or from mixing palette.

ESSENCE Magazine, Our Voice?
The binding edge of ESSENCE Magazine says - WHERE BLACK WOMEN COME FIRST!
Where we are 1st. Where we look 1st. Where we are the 1st image considered for presentation. Where we see ourselves 1st. Where we 1st graced EVERY cover. Where our history is 1st for dialogue. Where our many cultures are 1st to be glorified. Where we celebrate our rich history in America, 1st. Where major advertisers were 1st forced to produce ads that reflected our looks, culture & our American experience. Where these advertisers then paid for ad-space they would have 1st disregarded us in - were for the 1st time forced to reconsider their creative direction. Forced to see us 1st.
I am confident in Elianna Placas' abilities to be a very successful & proficient Fashion Director - in general. Her resume` speaks for itself. I do not wish to whisk her away in the spirit of "Affirmative Action". [sic] In fact, I look forward to her performance being a 2-handed slam dunk - in this capacity as a Fashion Director of a major U.S. lifestyle publication. YET...
The issue is this...
How likely is it that Elianna Placas ?:
_Identifies with years & years of not being able to find jeans that fit.
_Understands the feeling of not being able to wear foundation make-up that truly matched her skin.
_Knows the complete shame felt because her image is hardly, if ever seen in fashion, beauty, TV & film.
_Experienced the realization that celebrities of her heritage were/are not worthy of being considered a standard of beauty.
_Could not find swimwear that flattered her body type.
_Felt the frustration of near total exclusion within the industry (fashion) that she loves...
_Saw the ridiculousness in the 1st main-stream acceptance of our glorious rumps being heaped onto Jennifer Lopez.
It goes on & on. The fashion filter through our specific history & specific perspective is a unique one. Someone who may NOT HAVE BEEN IMMERSED IN THE CULTURE IS NOT QUITE AS LIKELY TO CONSIDER THESE THINGS as they convey the desires of the readership. Someone who lives/lived the culture stands at the ready. Not to ignore our over-all progress in the least. In its' extreme power, progress does not erase history.
Whatever has caused this to be, whether it be pressure from Time/Warner, whether she's good friends with ESSENCE'S Editor in Chief, whether ESSENCE actually seeks to, as Roland Martin hinted - be thee most progressive publication, whether the politics of corporate America have reared their ugly head again...
I wish there had been enough sensitivity on the part of Time/Warner & the ESSENCE EIC to honor & acknowledge the lack of inclusion of people of color in main-stream media/culture/arts/entertainment & the American experience as a whole.
It feels like we, AGAIN have been ignored, our buying power AGAIN disregarded, AGAIN we are not competent enough to be...in charge of the sound, tenor, tone, resonance, octaves of...
OUR OWN VOICE.

THE PERFECT BROW
The one thing that EVERY woman should have is a good brow arch. We are all born with a brow that is fitting for our facial shape and bone structure. I only wish to suggest that we can only improve upon nature. These brow basics will help you to show the world YOUR BEST BROW. Brow grooming at home is an option, but some things are best left to professionals. Whether handling your own arch or seeking the services of a QUALIFIED BEAUTY PROFESSIONAL, these rules apply.
1) Never alter your brow too much. An over-groomed brow can actually change your facial expression in several ways. Poorly shaped brows can make you appear to frown or give you a surprised look. Neither is appropriate. Also, over-enhancing could give you the 'Whatever happened to Baby Jane' effect. If you need assistance in determining your best look, see the guidelines below. If you decide to see a professional (Make-Up Artist, Esthetician), seek references from people you know who have nicely groomed brows. Many estheticians and make-up artists will be able to assist you in correcting brow disasters - whether by your own hand or some wayward makeover maniac.
2) Be knowledegable about the services that you seek. Getting a good arch will offer you several options. There is the standard hot wax method, tweezing and threading. Any of these is a good choice when receiving the service from a qualified beauty professional. All of these methods remove stray hairs from the root, resulting in a long-lasting clean arch. NEVER ALLOW ANYONE TO USE ANY FORM OF RAZOR to arch your brows. This can lead to cuts and scrapes, visible stubble after just days, and likely irritation - albeit a very unsatisfactory, short-lived result. Remember, you get what you pay for. The industry standard for a good brow arch will cost from $12 - $30 in most markets. If the service is too inexpensive, that should raise a red flag. Fees tend to be higher in cities with thriving entertainment and fashion industries. (Chicago, New York, Atlanta, Miami, Los Angeles) Look through the latest fashion & beauty magazines and check out the brows in cosmetic ads for Cover Girl, Lancome, Maybelline and Estee` Lauder - they get it right every time. Celebrities with perfect brows include Tyra Banks, Lara Flynn-Boyle, Ziyi Zhang, Thandie Newton, Heidi Klum and Mary J. Blige - just to name a few, IMHO
3) Know your own face. There are three basic guidelines to YOUR best brow shape. Get in the mirror with a narrow straight object (ruler, pencil, orange-wood stick) to assist you in viewing these guidelines AS DETAILED IN THE DIAGRAM BELOW: My ABCs of Brows & Facial Anatomy...
A _ The beginning of your brow should be somewhat parallel to the outer part of your nostril
B _ The highest point of your arch should line up with the outer part of your nostril and the outer of the pupil of your eye
C _ Your brow should then end at the point where you outer nostril lines up with the outer corner of your eye
Do your homework. IT'S YOUR FACE AND YOU WANT TO PUT THE BEST ONE FORWARD!!!
